Legacy Good Samaritan Medical Center

Legacy Good Samaritan is both a dedicated community leader and a medical center of national acclaim.

Located in the heart of Northwest Portland, Legacy Good Samaritan Medical Center was founded in 1875 by the Episcopal Diocese of Oregon. Today, it is a nationally acclaimed medical center specializing in the diagnosis and treatment of cancer, eye disease, heart care, rehabilitation, weight management and kidney transplantation.

Emergency Department/Urgent Care Construction Update

Legacy Good Samaritan will officially break ground on a large capital project that will transform of its Emergency Department and also create a new retail Urgent Care on Friday, May 8, 2015.  Specifically, the project, which is expected to be complete by December 2015, will:

  • create Oregon’s first Urgent Care located within an Emergency Department;
  • transform the current layout of the Emergency Department to be a more modern, multi-faceted, and efficient space; and
  • redesign Legacy Good Samaritan’s façade on Northwest 23rd Avenue.

Emergency Department Transformation
This renovation will redesign Legacy Good Samaritan’s Emergency Department to foster better patient flow, safety, privacy, efficiency and aesthetics.  Specifically, the project will create larger private rooms to accommodate modern medical equipment and multiple staff, if needed; separate care pathways that meet the unique needs of certain patient populations such as senior citizens and behavioral health patients; enhance Legacy Good Samaritan’s façade on northwest 23rd Avenue to include a new well-lit, covered entrance and offer complimentary valet parking.

Retail Urgent Care
The transformation of Legacy Good Samaritan’s west wing will also create Oregon’s first and only Urgent Care co-located within a hospital Emergency Department. The co-located urgent care is designed with the care and service needs of lower acuity patient but with direct access to the Emergency Department in the event of a more serious medical issue. Additional benefits of Legacy Good Samaritan’s co-located Urgent Care include:

  • substantial cost savings to the patient and to the health care system as a whole;
  • seamless transitions of care – Good Sam’s Urgent Care will electronically share treatment records with the patient’s personal doctor; and
  • access to hospital staff and resources in the event of a more serious medical issue.

Legacy Good Samaritan’s Emergency Department entrance will be temporarily located at Northwest 22nd Avenue and Lovejoy Street.  The permanent entrance on northwest 23rd Avenue will be re-opened at the conclusion of the project.

Approximately half of the patients admitted to Legacy Good Samaritan Medical Center are admitted through the Emergency Department for medical emergencies related to chest pain, abdominal pain, respiratory issues, headaches and injuries such as hip fractures.  The most recent renovation to the northwest Portland medical center was almost 30 years ago.
